I've also discovered what Wikipedia calls the seminal work of the 20th century lesbian vampire trope, namely Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu. First published in 1872, it tells the story of a young woman's susceptibility to the attentions of a female vampire named Carmilla. Apparently the vampiric powers of mind control were an acceptable device to approach the taboo subject of lesbian love. I'm currently reading this novella thanks to the fact that it's free in the public domain on Project Gutenberg, and you can too. An illustration of the two leading ladies in Carmilla:

Triggers And Squicks

Recently I had some cover art accepted for an anthology publication by Freaky Fountain. They are doing something really sensible and very interesting. A quote:

As (Freaky Fountain Press) releases may contain content that is “triggery” for some people, all FFP releases include a Trigger Warning page at the back of the book.

Further research deserves to be reblogged in the interest of public awareness, especially for those of us who write edgy erotic fiction. I would like to incorporate this into my pseudonymic erotica blogs if I don't think the presentation is too off-putting in itself. After all, part of the excitement of browsing edgy stuff on the net may be to some extent a surprise and psychological danger factor. The FFP statement on triggers and squicks:

"A 'trigger' is something that causes a particular person to re-experience some of the emotions or sensations of past trauma. Being “triggered” is when someone who has experienced psychological trauma in the past experiences psychological distress in the present upon reading, seeing, or hearing about something similar to their particular traumatic experience.

Due to the nature of Freaky Fountain content, some of our publications may have a higher risk of triggering people. As we want our readers to have the safest experience possible, we have provided a “trigger warning” list at the back of each book (check the Table of Contents for the exact page number). Yes, this is a day early, but I'm procrastinating a little bit this morning on the current novel after going crazy on it for a few days straight. This week I wanted to spotlight the excellent FF d/s fiction of krr1957, which is posted on Literotica.

These stories have received hundreds of thousands of reads over the years, so I'm sure they are well known to some, but not to me. The first story, You Are What You Eat, started very slowly, but the quality of prose kept me reading, and reading like I haven't in quite a while. (I just returned two lesbian novels to the library that I couldn't read more than a few pages of, due purely to awkward, headache-inducing sentencing and paragraphing.)

Review: Loving Helen An Erotic Story of Lesbian Submission By Liv Nilsson

This is the first (short) story that I've purchased for the Kindle, and it was frankly very anemic, offering (I hope), the bottom of the barrel of Kindle experiences for 99 cents. The text is clean and free of errors, but it's short, and almost all narrative summary, along the lines of: They fucked. She had two orgasms. It was awesome and wonderful. Her bum was lovely.

In fact, about 50% of the already very modest file is made up of advertisements for more "Spectrum Diva" products. No thanks. Of course I won't be so foolish as to throw out the baby with the bathwater, but I'll use care before purchasing another Spectrum Diva smidgen of smut. I'm not sure if I'd even call this smut, because the intent does not seem to be to arouse or even fulfill the expectations of any genre whatsoever.

I've critiqued many erotic stories over the past decade. My honest impression is that Liv Nilsson is not entirely an amateur writer. She understands the essentials of writing a story. I suspect that if she actually wanted to make the effort, she could write great things that would delight people. My overall impression here is that she did not choose to do that, and the goal instead was to write X words to make a buck or two.

It's possible that Liv has better work on Kindle, and if so I'd love to see it and give her another chance. For now she has lost me as a customer with this offering.

Weekend Lezdom Feb 11, 2011

This weekend's lezdom spotlight is on Lightning Warrior Raidy. Strangely I can find little information on Raidy, other than the fact that it's both a Hentai comic and a game. The scenario is a heroine (Raidy) who infiltrates a tower occupied by lesbian dominatrix sorceresses in order to free the kidnapped girls of a nearby village.

The Hentai comic can be found here at Doujin Toshokan--all eight chapters! This is a fun and high-quality black and white production. The video game offers color, but based on Youtube footage it's a very low quality production.

There is also a chapter two posted on Tumblr that I originally ran into. The drawing is higher quality and is downloadable. I'm a bit confused as to how these two Raidys fit together at the moment. Maybe a reader can clarify? I feel so lost without a Wikipedia entry.

Doll's Realm recently posted links to some nice FF material. I'd like to expand on the topic, in the interest of my ongoing kinky education. John Willie is a bondage and fetish artist and photographer (1902-1962), who was published by none other than Irving Klaw of Betty Page fame. You can see some samples of John's FF work here. His work is currently owned by Belier Press, and can also be found on Amazon.

I like the work because of the subject matter. The fetishized narrow waists and wide hips are inspiring. I particularly like Willie's use of self-cast shadows to create depth on the figures in some of his images. The style is similar to Frazetta's strong lights and darks. This sort of boldness is something that is always difficult for me. I think I need to practice with charcoal. You can look at a few pieces by Frazetta here.
